Parental Controls for kids
| Articles - IT for Home |
So you're a parent with valid concerns about what your child or teen is doing on the web. Here are my suggestions to help provide some kind of boundary for those who would like to place them. As a parent myself I know both the benefits and dangers of the web. If left uncontrolled kids can stay in cyberspace for hours at a time ignoring such simple things such as "talking" with other people. One can convey only so much through the web. Kids seem to be unphased by this, but sooner or later the "Myspace/Facebook" generation will have some issues interacting with folks in a "live" environment. Content is a whole other matter of concern and should be as important to parents to what the kids are viewing on the net as who your kids are hanging out with.

Most parents want to help but have no idea how OR do not have the finances to pay for some program. As usual I love trying to bridge this knowledge and financial gap by finding great gems such as this one. K9 Web Protection. This awsome "Free!!" program is a very nice and easy to use tool to install on either you child's computer or the family computer where you would like to set time and content restrictions. In short K9 is a program that runs in the background that monitors, logs and controls what kids can see and how long they can be on. It is very intuative and designed for easy use. You can set limits such no internet between 9:00PM - 6:00AM for example on monday - thur. Your child has an assignment to do and needs "dictionary.com?" at 1:00am? , no problem you can add exceptions so sites that are homework related are available 24x7. You know for the kids that decide to do a 3 week project on sunday night after 9:00PM. No internet is No excuse.
